Please note:  There is limited space for this workshop.  Early registration is encouraged.

Maine school districts have gathered multiple years of ACCESS data on their English Learners (ELs).  Aside from documenting and monitoring progress, what do the scores reveal about delivering classroom instruction or program delivery?  How does an EL’s language growth compare with other ELs?  What is considered “normal” growth?  Participants will be given opportunities to examine the implications of their student data in order to engage in more strategic support for their ELs.

Working with the WIDA ELD Standards - Thursday, October 20, 2011

     Freeport Hilton Garden Inn, 8:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.

ACCESS test scores guide teachers in how to apply the WIDA English Language Development (ELD) Standards to  classroom instruction. The ELD Standards model the academic language benchmarks that English Learners (ELs) need for learning content comprehensibly. Teachers can directly apply the Standards to create targeted formative assessments in listening, speaking, reading, and/or writing through the language derived from content. This workshop, delving more deeply into ELD Standards application, will guide participants constructively in a process for creating language targets to meet and expand the needs of ELs using practice samples from language arts, math, science, and/or social studies.

CAL Summer Institute participants

The June, 2011, 3-day residential training from the Center for Applied Linguistics (CAL) provided passionate English Language educators statewide with an opportunity to discuss effective reading strategies, collaborate with a variety of educators and build camaraderie through shared meals and dorm life.  The Maine Department of Education ESL/Bilingual Programs partnered with UMO's Project Opportunity to produce this year's Summer Academy.
