2010 Take (Live Capture) of Passage Northern Peregrine
Falcons for Falconry

 

Using this online service eligible individuals will be able to enter the 2010 lottery for take (live capture) of a passage northern Peregrine Falcon for falconry.

Applications must be completed by 11:59 pm (ET) on September 3, 2010.

A random chance drawing will be held on September 7, 2010.
A small number of juvenile Peregrine Falcons that migrate through Maine from northern Canada and Greenland may be captured for falconry. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Atlantic Flyway Council establish the number of birds that can be captured in Maine. Seasons and permit allocations are subject to change annually.

PERSONS ELIGIBLE TO PARTICIPATE IN THE LIVE CAPTURE OF PASSAGE NORTHERN PEREGRINE FALCONS FOR USE IN FALCONRY

Only individuals who possess a valid Master Falconer permit from the Department are eligible to participate; in addition, these Master Falconers must have their primary, permanent residence in Maine.

HOW TO APPLY

  • Eligible persons wishing to participate must file an online application on a form furnished by the Commissioner of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.
  • There is no application fee.
  • A person may file no more than one application.
  • The online application deadline is 11:59 pm (ET) on September 3, 2010. 

NUMBER OF PERMITS

A total of 2 permits will be available in 2010; 1 permit to each of 2 successful applicants. 

NOTIFICATION OF SUCCESSFUL APPLICANTS

  • Permittees will be selected by a computerized random drawing on September 7, 2010.
  • Each successful applicant in the permit drawing will be notified by mail after the drawing. You must provide a mailing address where you can be reached at this time.
  • Permit fees are $52.
  • Applicants not selected in the drawing will NOT be notified.
  • All selections are final; permits may not be transferred or sold.

TIMING OF LIVE CAPTURE OF PASSAGE NORTHERN PEREGRINE FALCONS

The live capture of passage northern Peregrine Falcons will occur from September 20 through October 20, 2010.

AREAS OPEN TO THE TAKE OF PASSAGE NORTHERN PEREGRINE FALCONS

Persons drawn to receive a permit may capture passage northern Peregrine Falcons on Maine offshore islands and south and east of Route 1 along the Maine coast, except that persons may not capture passage northern Peregrine Falcons on Mount Desert Island.

MISCELLANEOUS

  • Passage northern Peregrine Falcons eligible for live capture must have the blond head markings typical of northern peregrines. Permittees must immediately release any Peregrine Falcon that has a dark brown or black helmet head marking.
  • A permittee who captures a passage northern Peregrine Falcon for falconry must immediately band it with a non-reusable band supplied by the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, submit 4 breast feathers (cut at the feather base), and report the capture in accordance with Maine Falconry Regulations.
  • A permit holder may not transfer any passage northern Peregrine Falcon trapped under these regulations to another individual for a minimum of six months unless authorized by the Department.
  • An adult Peregrine Falcon, or any Peregrine Falcon captured and found wearing a leg band, must be released immediately. Prior to release, the Department encourages collection of 4 breast feathers (cut at the feather base) from each individual handled. Feathers and a report indicating the date, location, number, and age class of all Peregrine Falcons captured and released should be mailed to the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, Wildlife Division, 284 State Street, Augusta, ME 04333.
  • All other fees, laws, and rules relating to falconry apply.
