Importing Hemlocks to Maine

Maine has a Hemlock Woolly Adelgid (HWA) Quarantine (.doc) to prevent the introduction and spread of HWA in the state. To ensure you comply with the quarantine, follow the steps below when importing hemlocks to Maine.

Steps to bring hemlock into Maine

  1. Ask your supplier where they grow their hemlocks. Check the List of Counties Infested with HWA to make sure the trees are not coming from a quarantined area. Hemlocks grown in areas infested with HWA are NOT allowed entry into the state.
  2. Inform your supplier that Maine requires that a state phytosanitary certificate or certificate of origin issued by the appropriate state official accompany the shipment. The certificate should include the number of plants in the shipment, place (at least county and state) of orgin, and a statement that the plants were not grown, held or exposed to any hemlocks in a quarantined area.
  3. Have a copy of the certification faxed to (207)287-7548 or mailed to Maine Department of Agriculture, Division of Plant Industry, 28 State House Station, Augusta, ME 04333
  4. Ensure that any hemlocks being transported through a quarantined area will be protected from infestation. Plants should be transported in an enclosed vehicle and no plants should be added on or taken off the vehicle in a quarantined area.
  5. Notify Maine Department of Agriculture, Division of Plant Industry by phone (207)287-3891 or email Horticulture when the hemlocks arrive in Maine to schedule an inspection. Hold all the hemlocks at one location until you have contacted The Department and the plants have been inspected and released.

If you have any questions regarding importing hemlocks or other plants into Maine email Horticulture or call (207)287-3891.
