Golden Nematode - Update on the Canadian SituationFrom North American Plant Protection Organization's (NAPPO) Phytosanitary Alert SystemNEW BRUNSWICK, September 11, 2007- Golden Nematode (Globodera rostochiensis (Wollenweber) Behrens) and Pale Cyst Nematode (Globodera pallida (Stone) Behrens)are two species of Potato Cyst Nematodes (PCN). Both species are considered quarantine pests to Canada and are regulated by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA). In Canada, based on decades of soil surveys, the presence of Golden Nematode has only been detected in Newfoundland and in a small area of Vancouver Island (Saanich). As well, Pale Cyst Nematode is only present in a small area of Newfoundland. Strict quarantine measures remain in action and have been successful in suppressing and controlling these pests for more than 40 years. In August 2006, Golden Nematode was detected in the province of Quebec. Immediate phytosanitary measures were implemented to delimit this infestation and to prevent further spread (see previous NAPPO-PAS official pest report from Canada dated 08/15/2006 - www.pestalert.org/oprDetail.cfm?oprID=215). As a result, approximately 50,000 soil samples were gathered and analysed from Quebec and other areas of Canada to delimit the infestation. Since that time, regulatory actions in Quebec have included the establishment of regulated areas with implementation of strict movement restrictions on plants, soil and farm equipment. The regulated area in Quebec under Ministerial Order includes the municipality of Saint-Amable, as well as portions of the municipalities of Sainte-Julie, Saint-Marc-sur-Richelieu and Saint-Mathieu-de-Beloeil. Additional satellite sites are also regulated and subject to quarantine controls and regulatory restrictions, as they are connected to farm units located in the regulated area. The total area being regulated in Quebec covers 4,750 Ha, including 2,000 Ha of agricultural land. Regulated lands will be subject to a long-term management strategy aimed at suppressing and preventing the spread of PCN. In addition, Canada has recently increased PCN surveillance activities as a result of the recent detections in North America. Under IPPC standards, the Golden nematode is considered to be present, only in some areas of Canada (as specified above), and subject to official controls.
