Federal/State Inspection ServiceJoy inspecting potatoes

The Federal/State Inspection Service provides the fresh and processing industries with a needed and important quality control and quality determination service.  This service is a vital component if the tablestock sector of the industry is to experience any market expansion. The processing sector of the industry has long recognized the importance of having an unbiased, nationally recognized quality determination service.  This is evidenced by the fact that practically all potatoes and peas sold to processors located in Aroostook County are voluntarily inspected by the Federal/State Inspection Service. Wild blueberries for fresh use are also inspected under the provisions of a state marketing order. (207)764-2100

Consumer Food InspectionGerry inspects food prep area

The Consumer Food Inspection unit has broad responsibilities ranging from inspecting food salvage operations to ice manufacturers. The primary focus of the unit is to protect the consuming public by performing inspection and licensing activities ensuring that foods are packaged, processed, prepared and stored in sanitary and safe environments. Inspectors protect the consumers, while educating and working with owners of food businesses in the state. This partnership assures consumers of a safe food supply while providing marketing assistance to small and large businesses alike.

Red Meat and Poultry InspectionHeidi conducts sanitary inspection on a bandsaw

The Maine Red Meat and Poultry Inspection Program started daily inspections on June 16, 2003. Current meat plants under state inspection.

The program is regulating the wholesomeness and quality of Maine's meat and poultry, and ensures the consumer a safe product. The program is at minimum, equal to the current USDA Inspection System.

The objective of the Meat and Poultry Inspection program is to assist Maine's very small to medium sized meat and poultry processors by providing state inspected slaughtering facilities. This, coupled with timely, local decision-making will build on the success of the current industry while promoting additional business within the state.
