Dealing with Change in the Workplace

 

In today’s fast-paced job world, change is a natural part of the workplace terrain.  That’s why the state offers an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) as one of your benefits.  Our EAP is a confidential program that helps you address your personal concerns, so you can be your best at work and home. 

 

Help with Workplace Change

Change is never easy. We all need help now and then when changes at work present challenges.  No matter what kind of workplace changes you’re facing, it is natural to experience feelings of confusion, anger, and sadness.  If you are having a difficult time coping with change at work, remember that your EAP is here to help ease the transition.

 

Some of the workplace changes the EAP can help you adjust to include:

§         relocation

§         reorganization

§         downsizing

§         changes in staffing

§         new technologies and procedures

 

EAP counselors will listen to your concerns, work with you to develop strategies for dealing with these changes, and direct you to resources in your community that can provide further assistance. 

 

Strategies for Coping with Change

Change is a natural part of life, both at home and work.  We may not have control over all the job-related changes that come our way, but we can find positive ways to face them.  Following are some suggestions from your EAP to help you manage change effectively:

 

§         Tell yourself the truth. Allow yourself to be upset, worried or sad. 

§         Reach out to others. Discuss your feelings with supportive coworkers, friends, family, or the EAP.

§         Stay focused. Use “to-do” lists to keep your goals clear.

§         Be patient. It takes time to sort through all your emotions and adjust to change.

§         Let go of the past. Keep moving forward. Prepare yourself with a positive attitude and new skills.

§         Reflect on what you’ve learned.  Ask yourself, “What have I learned from this experience?”  Remember any successful coping techniques you used that may help you handle future changes.
