Lines, Lines, Where are the Lines?
In the spring do Maine roads...

Look like this?
Or like This!

On storm battered roads, lines are often the first to go.

WHY BE CONCERNED ABOUT PAVEMENT MARKINGS AND ARE THEY REALLY IMPORTANT?

1. Pavement markings help you just like signs and signals.

2. They are used to warn and direct drivers and to regulate traffic.

3. Pavement markings are a very important part of the communication system for road users along our Nation's highways and roads.

4. Can you imagine traveling on a freeway, major highway, or city street without the information that pavement markings provide? Pavement markings help you correctly position your vehicle, guide you through the many different situations you encounter, indicate where passing is allowed, and warn you of upcoming conditions

5. What if they are not there? You probably don't give much thought to how pavement markings are such a key part of your driving every day, and you may not realize there is a "system" or uniform pavement markings that make them instantly recognizable and understandable, no matter where you travel.

You can learn more about pavement markings. Start by clicking below on "Pavement Markings Types" and you can sequentially follow a series of pages that will then take you to the next section, Pavement Marking Colors, etc. Alternatively, you can skip directly to any particular subject that interests you.

When you are finished learning about pavement markings, you can take a Pavement Markings Quiz to see how much you know!

SO WHAT SHOULD A DRIVER DO AND HOW DOES THIS AFFECT ME?

  • Maine has only a few months in the summer to get pavement markings restored. DOT Striping Crews work diligently during these months which also happens to be the tourist season here in Maine so extra caution IS needed!
  • WATCH OUT FOR THE DOT STRIPING CREWS and give them room to do their job!
  • “WET PAINT” means “STAY OFF”
  • Remember if you can’t see the lines on the road; chances are the other drivers around can’t seem them either and they may make abrupt maneuvers that could affect YOU.
