How to File a Complaint
The Maine State Board of Nursing licenses registered professional nurses (RNs) and licensed practical nurses (LPNs). The Board also grants approval to nurses in advanced practice (nurse practitioners, nurse midwives, nurse anesthetists and clinical nurses specialists). If you have a complaint regarding the competence or unprofessional conduct of a licensed nurse, please send a letter with sufficient detail to:

The Board prefers a written letter over a "form to complete" because the writer generally sends a more complete description of the event. The Board office will acknowledge receipt of your letter. The next step in the process is that the Board office will send a copy of the letter to the nurse for his or her written response. You will be copied on that response when received. The Board, at its subsequent meeting, will determine whether or not a violation of the Law Regulating the Practice of Nursing may have occurred. If so, it will schedule the nurse for an informal conference to discuss the complaint further. The Board of Nursing does NOT regulate CNAs.
