Environment and Energy

Many people have the impression that Maine is a place where concern for the environment is a catalyst to economic activity. No where is this more evident than in this sector where long standing strengths in environmental services, equipment and resource management are now augmented by intense interest in clean technologies.

Efforts to develop wind, tidal and other hydro-kinetic power generation, as well as solar and hydrogen technologies are emerging. Another important intersection with the forest and agriculture sector is bio-based plastics and chemicals, as well as biofuels.

The environmental services area has several key attributes of a cluster, including a competitive position both locally and nationally, a solid base of knowledge and skills, and local conditions that spur competitive advantage.

Renewable energy and other clean technologies are an emerging cluster, with new technologies, and a market that is still in the future. National and international trends in sustainability, climate change and increased environmental sensibilities are driving this sector.

The sector is supported by a very strong academic research team which has won two major EPSCoR grants, and several world renowned climate change researchers.
