Information Technology

Information and telecommunications technologies are now ubiquitous, and so most every state has a group of companies that provide the computer and communications services that we rely on every day. In addition to these companies, Maine is also home to emerging clusters in geospatial technologies (mapping), new media, bioinformatics and specialized software development.
One unique aspect of information technology is that the majority of workers in the sector are employed by users of the technology, such as the large insurance companies in the state, and in call centers.
Another part of the information technology sector, those companies engaged in the production of semiconductors and measuring and controlling technologies, are included in our discussion of the Advanced Manufacturing Sector.
