Traditionally, this sector focused on precision manufacturing in fabricated metals and electronics. In practice, the sector definition has grown to accommodate the many advanced manufacturing technologies employed throughout a number of manufacturing entities, including those in other sectors such as ship and boatbuilding, advanced materials, biotechnology, pulp and paper, etc.
Large employers in this sector are the two major semiconductor manufacturers, the two shipbuilders, and some very large subsidiaries of multi-national companies that manufacture components for the aerospace industry.
