Emissions Inventory Program
A clear view of Mt. Katahdin from Scenic Overlook of I-95

The Emissions Inventory Program is responsible for compiling data on the release of air pollutants. The Emissions Inventory Program uses a variety of data sources and statistical modeling to calculate emissions from stationary sources (factories and homes), mobile sources (cars, trains, etc.), and biogenic sources (vegetation and soils).  The periodic compilation of the air pollutant emissions data is called an inventory.  For data compilation purposes, air pollutants are divided into three broad categories: criteria pollutants, hazardous air pollutants (also known as air toxics), and greenhouse gases.  This section is designed both to assist facilities in Maine with the collection and submission of air pollutant emission data and to disseminate information to the public about what those emissions mean for their health and the environment.

Maine DEP adopts changes to Chapter 137, "Emission Statements"

On October 16, 2008, the Board of Environmental Protection adopted changes to DEP's Chapter 137, "Emission Statements."  The effective date of the rule is November 8, 2008.  A copy of the rule is available from the Secretary of State's web site at http://www.maine.gov/sos/cec/rules/06/096/096c137.doc.  WebEx training on the revised rule was held in early December.  The presentation from that training is available on our 2008 Emissions Inventory page.

2008 Annual Air Emissions Inventory

The 2008 Annual Air Emissions Inventory is due on July 1, 2009 and includes reporting of hazardous air pollutants.  Please visit our 2008 Emissions Inventory page for downloads and information specific to this inventory cycle.

Emissions Inventory Information

Criteria Pollutants provides information about the criteria pollutants and information for businesses on reporting criteria pollutant emissions.

Greenhouse Gases provides greenhouse gas calculation tools and other information about calculating and reporting greenhouse gas emissions.

Hazardous Air Pollutants provides information about reporting emissions of hazardous air pollutants.

i-STEPS is the software used by the Emissions Inventory Program to collect data on criteria pollutant emissions.  This site contains information on obtaining and using the software.

List Servers provides information about both the Maine DEP and U.S. EPA list servers used to disseminate emissions inventory information to businesses and improve reporting and compliance.

MAIRIS is the new emissions inventory software program being developed by the Maine DEP to report point source emissions.

How do I find out about air emissions near my home? is the starting point for citizens interested in learning more about air pollution in their state and county.
