Are shorebirds threatened?

Analysis of survey data collected from Eastern Canada, the International Shorebird Survey (including Maine data), Arctic shorebird breeding surveys, and the Breeding Bird Survey all suggest that several shorebird species are experiencing significant downward trends.

These include: the Black-bellied Plover, Semipalmated Sandpiper, Least Sandpiper, Short-billed Dowitcher, Ruddy Turnstone, Red Knot and Dunlin. These species regularly use Maine staging areas.

Some shorebird populations remain stable.
