Note: The effective dates above describe when a law takes effect under Maine state law. In some cases, federal law may affect when a law is effective for a particular purpose. For example, laws that affect Maine's water quality criteria do not take effect until approved by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, based upon a provision of the federal Clean Water Act.
