Getting
Started - ArcMap
Concepts
ArcMap
toolbars
ArcMap is the basic application
used for GIS at MEDEP. It is the application where all maps are
made, and where most spatial analyses are run. This section shows
the basic ArcMap interface and toolbars, and defines what they are used
for.
Commonly-used buttons and tools (some of these can also be found in the
'File' menu):
New Map File - creates a new
(empty) map document.
Open - opens an existing map
document.
Save -
saves the current map
document.
Print - prints the current
map document.
Add Data - adds data to the
current map document.
Zoom In - interactively zoom
in by dragging a box or clicking on the map.
Zoom Out - interactively
zoom out by dragging a box or clicking on the map.
Pan - interactively move to
a different part of the map by dragging.
Select Elements -
select graphics interactively and turn off all other buttons.
Identify - interactively
identify a geographic feature to see its attributes.
Measure - measure the
distance between a series of points.
Measure Angle - measure the
distance and compass bearing between two points.
Toolbars
ArcMap has many toolbars (perhaps too many?). You can turn them
on and off by going to the 'View' menu - 'Toolbars' and checking it on
or off:

Or you can right-click any toolbars to get the same list and turn
toolbars on/off:

Typically, the minimum toolbars you should have turned 'on' are:

Tools
Many of the other toolbars have very specific functions and you may
find that you never use many of them.
