Basic GIS Tools - Drawing Order

Concepts:
   drawing order

Drawing order
The drawing order is simply the order in which layers are drawn in the data frame.
ArcMap will automatically put image (raster) data on the bottom, then polygons, then lines, and finally points (on the top).  This makes sense for drawing.  But there may be times where certain layers cover other ones, such as if you add the town polygons and any other polygon layer.  The towns may draw on top, entirely covering the other layer.  Switching the drawing order can fix this.  First, click on the 'Display' tab in the Table of Contents:

The 'Display' tab shows the layers in the order in which they are drawn in their respective data frames.  To move a layer up or down, just select it with the mouse, hold the mouse button down, and drag it up or down the stack.  Wherever you let go is where it will draw.
