Creating/Printing
Maps - Exercise 4
Scenario:
Now that your map data look good, you will need to change some things
on the layout, including changing the size to 11x17 (to include in a
report) and adding some map elements for clarity. Then you will
need to print out the map to include in a report and export the file to
PDF so web users can download it.
Step 1 Change
the page size
First, make sure the layout view is
showing. Change
the page size to 11x17 and use
whatever color printer
is closest to
your desk. When the page size is changed, the data frames may not
be adjusted the way you want them. Resize or move them as
necessary to make it look good.
Step 2 Set the map scale
Activate
the 'State Map' data frame
and set its scale to 1:1.25
million. Activate
the 'Inset of Acadia' data
frame and set its scale to
1:500000.
You may have to resize
the
'Inset' data frame to
accomodate all
of the Acadia-Ellsworth area, and you may need to use the 'pan' tool to show the right
area in
the 'Inset' data frame.
1.) What does a scale of 1:1 million mean on a printed
map?____________________________________
2.) If you wanted a scale that was relative, say 1" = 1000 feet,
what scale would you set?_____________
3.) What happens if you activate the wrong data frame and then
set the scale?______________________
4.) How many starship Enterprises have existed in the many TV
series and movies?_________________
Step 3 Add map elements
To enhance the usability of your map, add a title, legend, north
arrow, scale bar,
and the DEP logo. Place them where you feel appropriate.
5.) Which of these items are linked to the active data frame?
Title________ Legend_________ North Arrow__________
Scale Bar ____________ DEP logo____________
Step 4 Print the map
Almost done! Print out your map and see how it looks.
6.) What printer
would you use
for a size 'E'
map?_____________________________
Step 5 Save your work
Very important - make sure to save
your map document before you quit.
Step 6 Export the map to PDF
Last step - export
the map
document to a PDF file
(make
sure you put it in your folder under 'training'). Then,
using a mapped
network drive, open
it up on your computer. In this manner, you can email maps to
people without GIS. The PDF file can be viewed or printed from
any computer.
