GIS
Data - Finding GIS Data
Concepts:
where to find GIS data
z:\images folder
workspace
folder
G:\data_layers folder
MEDEP
GIS users have access to a tremendous library of geographic
information. One of the biggest challenges faced by the new user
is remembering where to find data. When you click on 'Add Data' , and go to the top of the Catalog
tree, you will see these options for adding data:

'z:\images' folder
This folder has raw images of aerial photos, USGS maps,
etc. Typically you won't use this folder until you are dealing
with advanced topics.
'G:\'
This is the 'workspace'
folder
where everyone works.
It
is comprised of the following folders:
airb - working folder for BAQ staff
brwm - working folder for BRWM staff
comm - working folder for OC staff
data_layers - folder containing major data layers
dep - folder for DEP cross-bureau projects and general information
gis - working folder for GIS Unit staff
lawb - working folder for BLWQ staff
other - working folder for non-MEDEP staff using our system
training - temporary folder for training students (while you're still
dangerous!)
'data_layers'
folder
Most of the typical mapping data needed by GIS users is available
through the 'data_layers' folder under '\\depsuna\workspace'. The
'data_layers' folder contains several subfolders arranged by topic,
each of these contains GIS layers.

The folders contain the actual layers, organized by category (bold indicates most popular):
annotation - labels for custom maps
atlas_grids - grid systems used for generating map atlases
brwm_gps_cad_data -
high-accuracy data collected via GPS or from CAD files for certain BRWM
sites
canada - basic data for displaying Canada in a continental-scale map
carto_grids - index grids for USGS maps, NOAA charts, and DeLorme Atlas
(they tell you what map to consult)
demographics - Census 2000 data
dep_facilities -
typically things the DEP licenses or permits such as air stacks or
overboard discharges
dep_monitoring -
typically things the DEP monitors such as spill sites
emergency_response - EMA layers such as hospitals, fire stations,
etc. Also includes spill response logistical support sites.
fauna - layers
representing locations of rare or sensitive animals in Maine -
typically for oil spill response or land licensing. Includes
Beginning with Habitat data.
flora - same as 'fauna',
but for plants
geology - geologic and
soil data at various scales
hydrography -
hydrographic data such as ponds, rivers, streams, watersheds, HUCs,
wetlands
image_catalogs - imagery
data including aerial photos, scanned USGS topo maps, NOAA charts, and
satellite imagery
industry - industrial sites likely to be impacted by an oil spill (fish
canneries, lobster pounds and dealers)
landuse_landcover - data
indicating vegetation types for Maine, including NLCD, CCAP, GAP, and
'Maine_combo'
logos - not really GIS
data, but contains logos used for MEDEP and Maine in maps
meteorology - meteorologic data including hurricane tracks and regional
wind speed/power
political - political
boundaries including towns, counties, DEP regions, senate/house
districts, school districts
regional - biophysical and climatic regions
topography - elevation
and depth data
transportation - roads,
railroads, airports
usa - lower-48 data for continental-scale maps
utilities - utility information such as high-voltage lines
