Prerequisites: Basic computer
concepts, basic geometry and geography principles.
Estimated
Time: 4 hours
Downloadable PDF version
of this class (1.8 MB)
This class is meant to
introduce you to the basic tasks required to start and access GIS at
the Maine Department of Environmental Protection (MEDEP). This is
the entry-level class for all GIS users (GIS
101, if you will). Each topic will teach you a critical skill
for using GIS - starting with simple concepts like opening ArcMap
and loading a map document, then using pan and zoom tools, changing
symbols, and finally creating layouts.
Like the other GIS training classes at MEDEP, this class will focus on
environmental and health issues in the Maine, in this case Mount Desert
Island.
Air pollution is a major problem in this region during the
summer, and MEDEP has several air quality monitors placed along the
coast to help monitor air quality. Since this area is not
producing the pollution, much research
has been initiated to pinpoint the source(s) of this pollution.
The monitors record data relative to pollutants for analysis by MEDEP
Bureau of Air Quality (BAQ) staff. The exercises in this
course will analyze a map which is used to show locations of ozone
monitoring stations in this region, such as is shown below. The
purpose of such a map is
for outreach to the public and for inclusion in reports.
