Creating/Printing Maps - Map Elements

Concepts:
   map elements
   title
   legend
   north arrow
   scale bar
   picture
   logo

All of these tools are available from the 'Insert' menu in the 'Layout View'.
Each of these objects can be inserted into the layout and moved, resized, etc. as needed.  The 'Insert' menu looks like this:

Title
Inserting a title will add a large text box in the top-center of the layout:

Double-click the title to edit or change font/size:
title properties dialog

The 'Insert' - 'Text' tool works exactly the same way, except that it is smaller by default and is always put in the center of your layout.

North Arrow
Again, this is on the 'Insert' menu.  A palette of north arrows will appear, this works exactly like the 'Symbol Selector'.  Select the arrow you want, it will be placed on your layout.  You can double-click it to change its properties, or just drag or resize it as needed.

Scale Bar
Like the North Arrow, this will bring up a palette of scale bars to choose from.  Select the one you want and add it to your layout.  Double-click it to change its properties, or just drag or resize it as needed.  The scale bar is only calculated for the active data frame, and is dynamically linked to it - if the scale changes in that data frame, the scale bar will automatically update so that it is accurate.  If you have multiple data frames, you can add scale bars for both by activating the data frame and inserting a scale bar, then activating the other data frame and inserting another scale bar.

Legend
Inserting a legend will bring up the legend wizard.  The first step is to select which layers will be in the legend.  After that, just accept the defaults for the legend.  The layers in the legend are derived from the active data frame.  Here is an example:

Names of layers and their drawing properties are all derived from the Table of Contents.  If you do not like the name of a layer in your legend, or the way it looks, change that in the Table of Contents - you will not be able to do it in the legend.  The legend is dynamically linked to the active data frame, so any changes to that data frame will show up in the legend automatically.

Picture / Logo
Any picture file (such as the DEP logo) can be inserted using 'Insert' - 'Picture'.  Just navigate to your picture and it will be added to your layout.  You can move or resize it by clicking it in the 'Layout View'.  Standard DEP and State of Maine logos can be found in \\dep-eia1fsd2550\workspace\dep\logos.
