It was created at the request of Maine DEP Bureau of Land and Water Quality (BLWQ) staff. It includes those classes in each layer which are best suited to calculating impermeability of watersheds - developed classes in MRLC, ag and forest classes in GAP. This layer file uses a standard color scheme for landcover classes created by Jeff Dennis, originally in ArcView 3. GAP and MRLC were combined according to the following priorities provided by Jeff Dennis, who spent a considerable amount of time checking both against aerial photos to determine the best categories in each for calculating imperviousness of a watershed. The list shows highest priority at the top: Grasslands - GAP Urban/Industrial - GAP Low-intensity Residential - MRLC High-intensity Residential - MRLC Commercial-Industrial-Transportation - MRLC Dense Residential - GAP Sparse Residential - GAP Open Water - MRLC All others - GAP So if a cell in GAP was grasslands, and the same cell in MRLC was coded as agricultural, the priority ruled that it would be grasslands in the combined layer. The values were altered so that the ancestry of any given cell can quickly be determined - all cells where VALUE is in the 100's are from MRLC, all cells where VALUE is in the 200's are from GAP. For complete process metadata for GAP and MRLC layers, see their respective metadata. Both MRLC and GAP (and thus, also Maine_Combo) are based on 1992 LandSat TM satellite imagery. The raw data is available in z:\images\landsat_tm. Purpose: The primary purpose for combining GAP and MRLC was to create a layer that had the greatest accuracy in calculating percent impermeability of a watershed. The Maine_Combo layer is also used widely by BLWQ staff to compute % landcover types in a particular area, typically a watershed. The coarse resolution (30-meter) of the data limits its usefulness to large areas such as counties or watersheds.
