Description:
Abstract:
Vegetation and land cover types were derived from
1991 and 1993 Landsat Thematic Mapper imagery. Supervised
and unsupervised classification techniques were used to
classify nine full or partial scenes. Training samples
were derived from interpreted aerial videography flown
during 1994. Ancillary GIS data layers used included
US FWS National Wetlands Inventory digital and paper maps,
USGS Digital Line Graphs, USGS Land Use/Land Cover database,
and point locations of blueberry fields and hay fields.
Purpose:
To serve as input into the Maine Gap Analysis Project.
Conservation efforts have concentrated upon rescuing
species from the brink of extinction. These programs were
reactionary, usually expensive, and sometimes disruptive.
In the mid-1980s, the gap analysis method was propsed and
tested, to address conservation of all species, not just
those currently rare. The gap analysis process provides
an overview of the distribution and conservation status of
several components of biodiversity. In Maine, specific
components of biodiversity include amphibians, reptiles, birds,
mammals, and woody plants. The spatial habitat map this document
describes was overlaid upon conservation areas, for example (Krohn
et al. 1998) to quantify its conservation status and species-rich areas.
Gap Analysis, by focusing on all species, is likely to be
both cheaper and more likely to succeed than conservation
programs focused upon single species or populations.

Landsat Thematic Mapper scenes were georectified to match positions
with high resolution 1:24,000 scale USGS quadrangles. Other
significant layers used were: a digital elevation model, supplied
by the Maine Office of GIS, which stores metadata for the layer
(http://apollo.ogis.state.me.us/); 1:100,000 scale hydrography
and transportation layers, documented by USGS; and USFWS National
Wetlands Inventory data, which is registered to USGS 1:24,000 scale
quadrangles.
Habitat patches are most important in determining the
horizontal position of potential habitat. These patches were
based upon Landsat Thematic Mapper data that was registered
to 1:24,000 scale control points. The patches were
identified as homogeneous habitat using a mixed supervised/
unsupervised classification (see Hepinstall et al. 1998) and
aerial videography images. Vegetation patterns in Maine were
sufficiently fine to allow us to identify the exact location
of aerial videography frames relative to the Landsat imagery.
