State Government Evaluation Act

Report to the 124th Maine Legislature

2009

David P. Littell, Commissioner

In 1995, the Government Evaluation Act, 3 M.R.S. §§ 951 to 963, was enacted by Maine’s 117th Legislature. That law establishes a system for periodic evaluation of the efficacy and performance of state government’s executive branch and independent agencies. The Government Evaluation Act generally applies to agencies and independent agencies that either receive money from the General Fund or that are established, created or incorporated by statute. The evaluation of agencies is on rotating schedule established in state law that ensures that each agencies is looked at in detail every 10 years.

The Government Evaluation Act replaces the functions of the former legislative Audit and Program Review Committee which was eliminated in 1994.
