Eastland Woolen Mill Superfund Site, Corinna
June 2, 2004

The EPA’s Non-Time-Critical Removal Action activities continue at the Eastland Woolen Mill Site in Corinna on two fronts:

Nobis Engineering, contractor to EPA for groundwater treatment activities, has completed the installation of bedrock monitoring wells and is planning and conducting site preparations for the drilling of overburden wells.  Chlorobenzene, referred to as residual dense non-aqueous phase liquid , was encountered at the overburden bedrock interface in one of the wells.  Nobis has been hired to conduct pre-design studies for in-situ (in the ground) treatment of the chlorobenzene using chemical oxidation.

Weston continues to operate the temporary groundwater extraction and treatment system and deconstruct facilities from the soil treatment activities, demolishing the extensive concrete pad and regrading the site.  These activities follow the phenomenal preparation, excavation, soil treatment and soil replacement activities that EPA has conducted over the past few years.
