Municipal E-Waste Recycling

In Maine, it is illegal to dispose of televisions and computer monitors. Each municipality (other than a municipality which chooses to dispose of televisions and computer monitors outside of Maine as allowed by the receiving jurisdiction) must provide its residents with a convenient system for collecting waste household computer monitors and televisions for recycling. A municipality may offer its residents:

It is illegal to trash your tv

  • On-going collection at the municipal transfer station, landfill or local/regional recycling center;
  • Periodic one-day collection events; or
  • On-going collection at a near-by private collection site operated by a consolidator approved to participate in the manufacturer responsibility system.

Although manufacturers pay for the recycling of household TVs and monitors, local e-waste collection facilities may charge a fee to cover the cost of their collection operations.

From January 2006 through June 2008, municipalities have recycled more than 10 million pounds of electronics for their residents!
