I want to thank most of the instructors for their efforts in the paperwork
process. There are still several instructors who (despite these e mails)
can't seem to get the process down. So excuse the repetitiveness of this e
mail:

1. Send one (1) Validation form with ALL students names listed on the
notes/comments line (send all student information forms). Only check the
first block if its a CRMA course. When clinicals are sent down by the
instructor (and not the clinical instructor) then the second box is checked.
This verifies that the instructor is validating that the student has
completed all components of the course. Please inform clinical instructors
to NOT send the forms to this office.

2. Students are still not filling out their forms correctly. They don't
seem to know where they live, their zip code, or phone number. They feel
they can refuse to give their Social Security number and/or address. This
is a state database, controlled by DHS, and houses all pertinent
information necessary to track students. Since there are many people out
there with the same names, the database tracks with Social Security numbers
the same as the Federal Government. When and if the Department creates a
registry, this information is vital. Instructors must check these forms for
completeness. If a student simply does not want to give us this
information, inform them that a certificate will not be issued, their
employer will be notified and they will not be able to pass meds in the
state of Maine. A students home address cannot be the work address. We are
catching some, but not all of them.. These certificates must go to the
student's home. The database and the Department have decided that this is
the way it will be.

3. When the 40-hour CRMA course is taught 6 med passes by an RN is
required. Students CANNOT do 3 med passes on a 40 hour course. 3 med
passes are only allowed on the 24-hour course taught from an approved DHS
24-hour course. The 40-hour course cannot be downsized to make 24. Any
additions or deletions from an existing 24-hour course must be re-approved
by the Department before being taught.

4. There have been a few instances now where someone has taken the CRMA
bridge course and never did have a CRMA certificate to begin with. When
questioned, the instructor said they never check for a current CRMA
certificate. This seems to be very bad practice to me and I am sure if
providers were aware that no one was checking for current CRMA certificates
they might be quite upset to think that someone is passing meds to our frail
elderly or other compromised adults without proper training.

5. Also, by virtue of state regulations, those persons working more than 20
hours per week must take state approved training, this being the PSS at this
moment for Level IV. Therefore, no person should be allowed to take the
CRMA course who does not already have either an RCS! or now the PSS course.

6. Now with the new BDS exception I will no longer hold student files open
more than 30 days. Those who do not complete the clinicals within that time
frame, the providers will get notice that the student must re-take the 40
hour course over.

7. A question has arisen about what happens when a student fails the
Bridge. Although the Department understands that a student has a
certificate that essentially does not expire, perhaps, until after the
Bridge course has been taken, it might behoove providers to have something
in policy that prohibits that CRMA from passing meds until they re-take the
CRMA course.

Thank you
