To all the CRMA instructors and Providers on each listserv.
For those providers who have not been in the loop, there has been a
discussion between instructors and the Department as to the method of
passing medications. Be it Pour-Pass-Document or Pour-Document-Pass
I have written to BDS with my take on this subject and asked Jane Gallivan
to come on board with me and I have contacted the Board of Nursing.
The "official" Department of Human Services position on this medication pass
procedure is as follows:
Pour - Pass - Document
The board of nursing stated that current acceptable nursing practice was to
pour - pass - document
This is what and why we put that in the 40 hour curriculum. Because DHS
wants all CRMAs to be taught consistently and because DHS also approved the
original 24-hour courses, it can expect that the standard set forth by DHS
would be adhered to. DHS has given BDS this waiver to allow them to be able
to come on board by July 2006. DHS does not want to compromise the
standards set forth in the 40 hour curriculum, and I don't believe BDS does
either. I believe they would want their CRMAs to all be taught the same
also. I will know better when Jane responds to my e mail.
In no way should facity policy contradict standards of practice or in this
case current acceptable nursing practice. The original intent of the
curriculum alluding to facility policy was for those situations where
facilities don't even allow CRMA to pass medications, or to order
medications or to give insulin injections, etc. It was not the Departments
intent to allow facilities to contradict current acceptable practice or
regulation.
I think its healthy that discussions such as this can happen on this venue,
but this is an area which I have always felt strongly about even my time as
a long-term/multi level administrator. Those still in doubt of my response
can contact Ginny Delormier at the BON.
So, to recap: This puts to rest (although it has been healthy) the position
of DHS on medication pass procedures to be: Pour - Pass - Document
Thank you all, and see you on the QA trail.
