Hi all,
I would be reluctant to support the pretest or even written policy in this area. I like Ham's wording of "discourage". English competency/comprehension could be added to the job description or essential functions of the CRMA role, in order to provide legal backup to a common sense solution. I would hope this could not evolve into a "disability" that needs reasonable accommodation....

My thoughts:
If the student can not complete the Student Information Form without
assistance, due to a reading in English deficit, I discourage them from
continuing. I tell them they will have to read and complete the quizzes
and final exam in English, and without help, in order to pass the class.
My rational is: 1. Orders are written in English, 2. MAR's are written
in English, 3. Reference materials are most commonly available in
English. 4. Most doctors and pharmacists speak only English. 5.
Emergency personnel speak primarily English. 6. Other CRMA's speak
mostly English. 7. It is a consumer safety issue.

Hello to all,
I have to agree whole heartedly with Bonnie. We need to be very
careful
that we're not setting people up to fail. Creating such a test would
require someone with expertise in those areas.
Thanks for listening,

Hello all,
We at OHI have not run into it as much. We would consider a test that
was
developed by someone with expertise in diversity and cultural competency
as
it is a great liability to set someone up for failure if you do not
possess
those skills in test development.

Dear CRMA Instructors,
Is anyone out there using a reading assessment test to screen potential
students before they register for crma classes? We are starting to be
overwhelmed by students wanting to take crma whose first language is
not English. Many have done just fine, but several students have
started the course and then ended up failing due to language
difficulties.
I believe that the TABE test costs quite a bit of money. We are
thinking of creating our own comprehension test and requiring that all
students take it prior to registration.
Is there a test already out there that any of you are using? Are any
of you running into the same challenge and, if so, how are you handling
it?
Many thanks,
Kate O'Neill, RN
