Kate

My sincere apologies that you felt attacked in any way. I have collaborated
with some people since 1979 at BMHI. I know the professional intent. I
embrace other ideas and also come from a Human Resources perspective that
leads me inevitably to look at things from an ADA view. I viewed your
statement that said you would make up your own comprehension test, dissect
my e-mail, I responded by saying we would likely not do that here at OHI due
to the liability involved. I spend as much time in employment law training
as I do in professional development. It is commendable on your part to
create a test, it just will not happen here at OHI. I just wish to paste
the response from Mindy Ward when I explained what had happened as a result
of my e-mail. Remember, she has been in employment hiring for 30 years for
our company and that is how she views things.

Hi Bonnie,
Phyllis will fax you pages 30-31 of the Maine Employers Handbook. Check out
2.16, Race Discrimination. See also 5 M.R.S.A. 4572 (1). See also the
Maine Human Rights Act 5 M.R.S.A. 4551-4633.
Mindy

Again, I read the responses and did not see the "attack" in them, only
varying points of view and valuable discussion. I depend on my colleagues
for guidance and honesty. I appreciate you all. Let's put this to bed.

Respectfully

Bonnie

Kate,
It's unfortunate that your question was misunderstood and that you had
negative feedback. I have run into this issue several times.
Approximately a year ago, or longer, I started having students do a
brief exercise on the first day where they read and respond to just a
few questions regarding their experience in the field and their
educational background. This helps me to see first of all what is the
diversity of skill level and knowledge in the class and secondly, who
may have difficulties with reading, writing, following directions etc.
I have had students where English is their second language and they do
not read or comprehend English competently enough to be safe to pass
meds, they are unable to pass the quiz, test, and med transcription/pass
exercises. Not speaking/understanding English because it is not your
primary language is not a disability. Speaking, writing, and
understanding English is clearly written in the curriculum as a
requirement for CRMA's. The problem becomes "judgment" of someone's
level of English skills. That's why I like your idea of a standardized
test that already exists for use in other arenas. Such as the TABE that
Peter suggested.

I think we should support each other in helping to find an equitable
solution to this problem that serves both the student and the
individuals we provide services for.

Sandra

I just have to say that I really resented anyone thinking that it was my
intention to set anyone up to fail. My intention is just the opposite -
to set people up to succeed. I doubt that I'll be using this list-serve
again. It does not feel good to be attacked.
