There have been questions about the transcription of the xanax order. The
regulations require that antipsychotics be given on a scheduled basis.
Psychotropics such as xanax may be given PRN as long as there is a maximum
number of doses specified. If the frequency is "q 4 hrs PRN." the maximum in
24 hours would be six doses based upon the frequency identified. If the
doctor orders
"q 4 hrs. and may have two additional doses for severe agitation for a
maximum of 8 doses in 24 hours," the maximum dose in 24 hours in 8. (The
first one specifies based on the frequency, the second is adding to the
frequency additional doses if needed.)
