Subject: RE: beas-crma Notification Forms
Hi, Carol
To re-cap our recent lengthy phone conversation regarding the CRMA re-cert
exams, I totally agree with the items that Cynthia Ranco, RN addressed. 1).
As you were taking notes we chatted about the transcription exercise(s) and
the dates on the prescriptions i.e.; mo/18/year or mo/06/yr; dates for the
MD orders.(one set has dates, the other doesn't) etc. and then later to
chart starting on the 4th for five days. Transcription exercises should be
appropriate and directly related to what CRMAs encounter. 2). As previously
discussed during instructor meetings, it is most degrading to expect our
staff to perform transcription exercises on someone called Sponge Bobbi.
3). I am adamant that another RN be allowed to monitor the "Vital Sign"
segment, if the instructor so determines. 4). The curriculum indicates that
CRMAs are not to calculate. Conversions are not necessary as pharmacy
labels are very specific to dosage = # tablets, tablespoons = mg, etc. I do
feel that basic conversions are utilized by using the "tools at
hand".....the plastic graduated med cup pouring at eye level; referring to a
up-to-date conversion chart which should be on every med cart and/or
cupboard. The knowledge of abbreviations is a must, but when in doubt,
again the CRMA knows how to use the resources. 5). I do feel that the exams
are appropriate and fair (minus those corrections which have already been
addressed). I agree with the Competency Based approach, but certainly the
expectations of transcription accuracy should begin with a more suitable
scenario. Thank you for considering me on your panel of nurses as you begin
reviewing this re-cert.

Subject: beas-crma Notification Forms
1. The clerical support persons are finding alot of Notification Forms
with the type of CRMA class and only dates and times. I will see about
getting this form revised to include a line for type of CRMA class. In the
meantime, please put the type of class either on the Date line or the Times
line. Also, there are alot that come in without the county under the
provider information.
2. We will also, be revising the Recertification Guidelines form for
clarity and changes we have recommended based upon feedback.
3. If you have comments regarding either the Mock Medication Pass Form
or the Medication Administration Skills Checklist Form, please forward them
to Peter or myself for we will be reviewing these.
Thank You.
