beas-pss Follow-up response of Recert class

From: Davis, Carol A (Carol.A.Davis@maine.gov)
Date: Fri May 06 2005 - 09:07:19 EDT

I want to thank all of the instructors that were able to attend the PSS
recertification classes. It was nice to put a name with a face. I am
sending a complete list of the items discussed with answers from the five
recertification classes so that all of you know the same information.
1. Changes are being made to the web site validation form to reflect "50"
not "5" face to face hours and also the box 1 students listed "below" in the
above training.
2. Because of the student-instructor power differential, students may not
respond honestly on evaluations, so from time to time we plan on sending out
random evaluations to classes from our office for QA purposes.
3. The training regarding the Heimlick Maneuver is now recognized as an
invalid identifier of the procedure. Transferring a resident has changed.
Straddling the choking victim is OK but kneeling at one side is also
accepted. Would instructors utilize information that they have found that
is accurate. Please keep a bibliography for all material that is used that
is up to date and submit this information to Community Services Licensing
Peter Mauro at 442 Civic Center Drive Augusta, Maine 04333. When the Dept.
rewrites the curriculum, we may select from material that is current and
most popular.
4. If instructors would like CPR as part of the curriculum, it must be added
on at the end at the students expense not as part of the curriculum. CPR is
not required in residential care facilities.
5. The organization chart in the curriculum is now obsolete. Please use the
organizational structure handout that was provided at the recertification
class.
6. There is repetition between the PCA text and the curriculum. Although
there is duplication in the safety and communication sections, it is up to
the instructor to decide if they want to teach twice for reinforcement or
just indicate to the students that this topic is also discussed in their
manual without teaching the topics twice (personal style).
7, Notifications forms can be faxed in the last minute if you have a full
class. The purpose of the 30 days was to allow for advertisement on the web
so that you could fill your classes.
8. If classes are cancelled, please fax or e-mail us so we can delete the
notification from the data base.
9. If a PSS class is going on and a new employee arrives, they can not for
example, begin on Module 3,they must begin atModule 1.
10. A meeting is planned on 5/16/05 with Rowann Seeley of the Dept. of
Education to discuss concerns of CNA instructors receiving PSS students into
the CNA class at Module 6 or CNA students dropping out of class to take the
PSS after 20 hours. Also, we will discuss if there is a necessity to have a
proficiency test for PSS or CNA upon entering the CNA classes at Module 6 or
at 20 hours in the PSS. The final decisions will be posted in the future on
the listserve.
11. The PSS is to be taught in its entirety, we would accept the first aid
training of the PSS for the first aid requirement of the first aid kit
regulation. If a facility has a separate training in first aid that is
required by BDS, then you must continue to meet their requirements. As you
know, DHS/BDS have merged. I will be sure to communicate the concerns
regarding the duplication. The merging of these departments has for one of
its main objectives, to stop duplication.
12. If you have students that are working in the residential care setting,
remember they have 120 days to get their PSS training completed, different
from the home health requirement.
13. There will continue to be recertification classes for instructors every
two years.
14. For the current regulations for assisted living programs, go to
www.maine.gov.dhhs/beas <http://www.maine.gov.dhhs/beas> click on provider
info, click on assisted living tab at the top of page, then scroll down to
regulations. If you want PNMI rules, go to provider info, scroll down to
rulemaking. If you want a students certificate for your facility or future
trainings, go to http://beas.dhs.maine.gov <http://beas.dhs.maine.gov> ,
click on third button for trainings and fourth button for certificates.
