Hi Instructors-
We have not been on the list serve for awhile because of network issues.
Currently we have three committees going on:
1. The Legislated committee to design a new curriculum for the MR
facilities to meet their specific training needs.(Began 2/24/06)
2. The 40 Hour Curriculum to review, update and make necessary changes
needed in the curriculum.(3/30/06)
3. The PSS Curriculum to review and update and make necessary changes
needed in the curriculum. (Begins 6/30/06)
An astute instructor recently observed a student in a recert class with a
copy of #2 standardized exam and confiscated it. If instructors are letting
students have their exams to keep after, it provides the students an
opportunity to circulate the exams prior to testing. Please do not continue
this practice if you are. I am not sure how the student acquired the exam,
they indicated from another student. When the 40 hour committee finishs with
the curriculum, it will be working on the Recert curriculum and exams.
Some of you have called about CNA/CRMAs in the home setting. The board of
nursing web site is www.state.me.us/boardofnursing
<http://www.maine.gov/boardofnursing> . or call Virginia Delormier
287-1133. If a CNA is going to pass medications in the home health world,
they must take the department approved curriculum. (CRMA is approved)
Please read:
Title 32-$2102 Chapter 31 Nurses and Nursing Subchapter 1-2102 D.
Delegation of selected nursing services to assistants to nurses who have
completed or are currently enrolled in a course sponsored by a state
approved facility or a facility licensed by the Department of Human
Services. This course must include a curriculum approved by the board. The
board shall issue such rules concerning delegation as it considers necessary
to ensure quality of health care to the patient.
Board of Nursing-Chapter 6, Regulations Relating to coordination and
oversight of patient care services by unlicensed health care assistive
personnel.Section 2, Elements of Coordination and Oversight-Factors to be
considered by the nurse as to whether that nurse may coordinate his/her
services with unlicensed health care assistive personnel, consistent with
patient safety, include without limitation: acuity of the patient; stability
of the condition of the patient; training and capability of the unlicensed
health care assistive personnel;nature of the tasks; and the setting in
which care is to be delivered.
Chapter 5, Regulations Relating to Training Programs and Delegation by
Registered Professional Nurses of Selected Nursing Tasks to Certified
Nursing Assistants, page 2 number 3. The registered profession nurse also is
responsible for supervision of nursing assistants to whom such delegation is
made. The degree of supervision needed shall be determined by the registered
professional nurse after an evaluation of all factors involved, including
without limiitations:a. stability of the condition of the patient b. The
training and capability of the nursing assistant to whom delegation is being
made;and c.the nature of the tasks being delegated.
If you should get students that are not connected with a facility, please
remind them to contact us or find a site for medication passes. Some have
been under the assumption that medication passes were to be provided as part
of the classroom curriculum. I am not sure if they made this assumption
because they didn't know or they weren't told the difference.
Please call with any questions.
