For some reason, the "Reply" set for this list is the individual person,
instead of the whole list. For those of you who have a "Reply to All"
button on your e-mail, can you hit that to respond? That way everyone will
get your response!

A basic cookbook is an awesome idea. I wish we had time and the facilities
to do a whole cooking course as it is definitely needed.

(Cooking can be so important for a consumer) . . . yeah, how many of us
would look forward to a bad meal? For me food can be quite therapeutic (but
only if its cooked correctly!). How large is the cookbook? Have you gotten
feedback on whether people utilize it afterwards?

Thanks for your input!

Scot

I really enjoy these discussions. We have compiled a "Cookbook" with
many basic recipes and information that the PSS can carry in his/her bag
for reference while in the home. Elementary information such as how to
make a poached egg seems to throw them for a loop. I agree that many
students do not know how to cook with basic ingredients. If it comes
out of a box or can be heated up in the microwave is the requirement for
many new PSS to be able to cook. Cooking can be so important for a
consumer.

I like that idea of having them cook a meal - do you have kitchen
facilities
for them to use? Probably 1/2 of the people we have come through here
don't
know how to cook, and often times they are heading off to agencies where
part of their job description is to cook for people!

Hello Scot, I do similar activities. For the shopping section I take it
a
step further and have the students include directions for the menu using
the
items they have purchased. I require them to present menu using all food
groups keeping in mind special diets. Another idea is to have students
make
lunch using items purchased. (Sometimes local stores will donate items)
I
have asked students to comparison shop and did they get a good deal and
what
would they do differently? Doreen

Hi Fellow PSS Instructors,

In my quest to get creative with the curriculum (if I can find a fun way
to
present an un-fun topic), I have come up with a few things in Module 11
(IADLs), and was wondering how other people present this module. For
example:

1. For the shopping section, I have given people a list of grocery
items
(such as ice cream), and send them to the local supermarket to get
information on the least expensive unit price, as well as to list
alternatives for people on therapeutic diets (such as low/no salt,
diabetic,
low-fat). I also give them some "fake coupons" (to decide if they're a
good
deal or not) and tell them to use the store's circular.

2. For the Money Management section, I have come up with some fake
receipts
and deposits (on a worksheet), and then have created a "money log" to
fill
out based upon those receipts and deposits. This helps me ascertain
whether
they are getting the seriousness of handling money, and all the issues
that
can create.

3. Finally, I have people come up with a housekeeping plan based on the
days of the week (similar to the textbook, but they do it on their own),
and
then hand out a sample that I created which is very detailed

Anyhow, there are some of my wacky ideas - I would be happy to provide
copies of any of these if you're interested in using them or seeing
them.
They definitely break up the day a little more.

Now that I've shared mine, what ideas are you all using for this
particular
module?
