OSA Announces Phase I SPF-SIG Awards
Funded Projects Will Address Substance Abuse Prevention
AUGUSTA, ME – The Department of Health and Human Services’ Office
of Substance Abuse (OSA) recently announced the recipients of eleven $50,000
grant awards for county level strategic planning and environmental programming
for substance abuse prevention under the Substance Abuse and Mental Health
Services Administration’s (SAMHSA), Strategic Prevention Framework State
Incentive Grant (SPF-SIG).
“With these funds, we have an opportunity to begin developing a comprehensive
community-based substance abuse prevention infrastructure throughout Maine,” said
Kimberly Johnson, OSA Director, “We will be able to plan, create, and
support a strategic prevention plan that will improve access to substance abuse
prevention services in each county.”
In Phase I of a three-phased approach, these awards will provide resources
for establishing or strengthening a coordinated county-level prevention system
and will complete a county-wide needs/resources assessment and strategic prevention
plan.
The eleven sites listed below were funded for Phase I.
- Community Concepts, Oxford County* – Healthy Oxford Hills, River
Valley Healthy Communities Coalition
- Day One, York County – Partnering
with the York County Prevention Collaborative members
- Hancock County Planning
Commission, Hancock County* – Partnering with
Healthy Hancock members and Hancock County Sheriff’s Department
- Healthy
Androscoggin, Androscoggin County* – Partnering with Lewiston,
Auburn and Lisbon Police Departments
- Healthy Community Coalition, Franklin
County and Livermore, Livermore Falls – Partnering
with Jay School Department, MSAD 36, Evergreen Behavioral Services and Farmington
Police Department
- Maine General Medical Center, Kennebec County – Partnering
with Greater Waterville PATCH, Healthy Communities of the Capital Area,
and Capital Kids/Augusta C4CY
- Mid Coast Hospital, Sagadahoc County and Brunswick – Partnering
with United Way of Mid Coast Maine, Sagadahoc County Sheriff, Bath/Brunswick
PD, Bath/Brunswick and Topsham Schools, and Access Health Coalition.
- Penobscot
Bay YMCA, Knox County – Partnering with Knox County Community
Health Coalition members
- People’s Regional Opportunity Program, Cumberland
County* – Partnering
with Medical Care Development and the City of Portland Public Health Division
- Regional
Medical Center at Lubec, Inc., Washington County – Partnering
with Health Ways, Neighbors Against Drug Abuse, and Washington County Drug
Action
- Somerset County Association of Resource Providers, Somerset County* – Partnering
with Youth and Family Services Inc., and Somerset County Sheriffs Department
The five grantees marked with an asterisk will also receive additional funding
to implement Phase II, which provides resources to concurrently implement a
set of strategies to change conditions in the social environment that encourage
or enable underage drinking, which is one of the top priorities identified
in the SPF-SIG state strategic plan.
Two Prevention Centers of Excellence (at the University of Maine and the University
of Southern Maine) will work with interested partners in the five counties
from which no applications were received in order to assist with the development
of strategic plans and needs assessments in those counties as well.
