The Flying Santa
arrived by helicopter at the Burnt Island Light Station on Saturday, December
18, 1999. He was welcomed by Governor Angus King, the governors wife Mary
Herman, and their children, along with DMR Commissioner George LaPointe and
Keeper Elaine Jones. Santa distributed presents and candy canes to many anxious
children from the community and the DMR staff. He gave Elaine Jones, and her
family, a large box filled with coffee, tea, hot chocolate and snacks. Governor
King assisted Santa in hoisting an eight foot wreath onto the lighthouse. The
children all sang Christmas songs after the wreath was positioned on the tower.
Members of the fishing community, and the Coast Guard, viewed the festivities
from the water. The wreath serves as holiday greeting to them as they return
from their day at sea.
