SUBJECT: Northern Region Spiny Dogfish Fishery Closed

This memorandum is to inform the states that the 2009/2010 Northern Region quota for spiny dogfish is projected to be harvested by Sunday, September 27, 2009.

Therefore, in accordance with Addendum II to the Interstate Fishery Management Plan for Spiny Dogfish, effective 0001 hours on September 27, 2009, the states of Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut are required to close their commercial spiny dogfish fisheries. Addendum II requires states to prohibit commercial landing, harvest, and possession of spiny dogfish when the quota in their region is projected to be harvested. States in the Northern Region may re-open their spiny dogfish fishery no earlier than 0001 hours on May 1, 2010 when the 20010/2011 fishing season begins.

The spiny dogfish fishery in the Southern Region (New York, New Jersey, Delaware Maryland and Virginia) and North Carolina will remain open until each area’s quota is harvested.
