Clarification Notice to Atlantic Herring Fishery:

Atlantic Sea Herring Management Plan
Area 1A Effort Reduction Provisions

It shall be unlawful to fish for, take or land Atlantic herring in ASMFC Management Area 1A until 00:01, June 1, 2013.

Addendum 1 to Amendment 2 to the Interstate Fishery Management Plan for Atlantic Herring specifies that determination of the annual quota specifications; including quota periods, overharvest measures, rollover and days out are to be determined before or at the ASMFC annual meeting. The ASMFC Atlantic Herring Section met on October 22, 2012 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and agreed to prohibit directed fishing in Area 1A until June 1, 2013 and to set the 2013 Area 1A seasonal allocation at 72.8% of the quota June 1 – September 30 and 27.2% from October 1 - December 30. The Section also agreed to close Area 1A at 95% of the quota and to allow the rollover of unused quota from the two periods.


Any vessel may land herring as an incidental catch caught in ASMFC Management Area 1A in any Maine port, as long as such herring do not comprise more than 2,000 pounds per trip and such herring does not constitute more than 10% of the catch by weight.
