Area 1A Effort Reduction Provisions, Effective June 1, 2014
The Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission’s (Commission) Atlantic Herring Section members from Maine, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts, with input from members of the sea herring commercial industry, has set a “days out” effort control measure to allow five (5) landing days a week in Area 1A during the Atlantic herring 2014 fishing season from June 1 through September 30, 2014 (Trimester 2). The States will meet again on July 2 and July 23, 2014 via conference call to review the rate of catch and discuss further changes as necessary.
Effective June 1, 2014 at 00:01 and until further notice, it is unlawful to land Atlantic herring in the State of Maine taken from ASMFC Management Area 1A, except:
- Vessels may land five times from Sunday, 6 PM to Friday, 6 PM
- Vessels may only land once during any 24 hour period
- Any vessel may land herring as an incidental catch caught in ASMFC Management Area 1A in any Maine port, as long as such herring do not comprise more than 2,000 pounds per trip and such herring does not constitute more than 10% of the catch by weight.
- Fixed gear fisherman (weirs and stop seines) are not subject to this provision.
