Notice to Atlantic Herring Fishery: Closure of Area 1A Directed Fishery in State and Federal Waters, Effective November 5, 2012FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE, NOVEMBER 2, 2012ASMFC PRESS CONTACT, TINA BERGER, 703.842.0740 Ninety-five percent of the Atlantic herring total allowable catch (TAC) allocated to Management Area 1A is projected to be harvested by November 5, 2012. Therefore, pursuant to Section 4.2.7.2 of Amendment 1 to the Interstate Fishery Management Plan for Atlantic Sea Herring, the directed fishery for Atlantic Herring in Management Area 1A is closed effective 1200 hours (noon) local time, November 5, 2012. The directed fishery will open at 0001 hours, January 1, 2013. Vessels participating in other fisheries may possess no more than 2,000 pounds of Atlantic herring per trip for the duration of the 2012 closure as specified by Section 4.3.1 of Amendment 2. Section 4.3.1 also stipulates that all vessels traveling through a closed area must have all seine and mid-water trawl gear stowed.
