Notice to Atlantic Herring Fishery: Atlantic Sea Herring Management Plan Area 1A Effort Reduction Provisions, Effective June 26, 2011

Section members from the States of Maine, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts discussed 2011 Area 1A effort controls at a meeting in Durham, NH on June 24, 2011. At this meeting it was decided that states would allow three landings days per week until Sunday July 17, 2011. It was also decided that beginning July 17, 2011 the states would allow four landing days per week until September 30th. The States will meet again on August 2, 2011 to review the rate of catch and discuss further changes as necessary.

Landing Restrictions:

Effective June 26, 2011 until further notice, it is unlawful to land Atlantic herring in the State of Maine taken from ASMFC Management Area 1A, except:

Vessels may only land once during any 24 hour period as follows:

  • Vessels may land three times per week between Sunday, 6 PM to Wednesday, 6 PM from June 26, 2011 to July 13, 2011.
  • Vessels may land four times per week between Sunday, 6 PM to Thursday, 6 PM from July 17, 2011 to September 29, 2011.

Exceptions:

  • Any vessel may land herring as an incidental catch caught in ASMFC Management Area 1A in any Maine port, as long as such herring do not comprise more than 2,000 pounds per trip and such herring does not constitute more than 10% of the catch by weight.
  • Fixed gear fisherman (weirs and stop seines) are not subject to this provision.
