An annual trawl survey for northern shrimp is conducted in the western Gulf of Maine each summer aboard the R/V Gloria Michelle. The survey is a collaboration of the Ecosystems Survey Branch of the Northeast Fisheries Science Center (NEFSC) (NOAA, NMFS), the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission (ASMFC), and biologists, students, and volunteers from Maine, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts.  The survey vessel and crew conduct tows all over the western Gulf of Maine, collecting, counting, and weighing all shrimp and other fish species caught. It is the main source of data for the annual northern shrimp assessment. The data will be compiled and the annual assessment document will be available in October.

The 2014 survey began July 20 and will continue through August 16.  ME DMR biologist Les White will be the lead shrimp biologist for the second leg (week) of the survey. The Gloria Michelle will be docked in Portland the weekends of July 26-27 and August 2-3.
