Fall Unfolds in Northern Maine
AUGUSTA, Maine (September 17, 2003)
This week’s Maine foliage report from the Department of Conservation reveals increased color change in the state’s two northernmost tracking zones.
Maine Forest Service rangers are reporting low, or less than 30 percent, color change in the northwest (Zone 6) and the northeast (Zone 7).
“Notable color can be seen in swamp maples and yellow birch, which typically reveal color early in the season,” according to Ranger Todd Weeks. Weeks reported his observations from the town of Masardis located along Route 11 south of Ashland and southwest of Presque Isle.
The color change throughout the tree canopy in the rest of the state remains low, or less than 10 percent, while leaf drop remains very low statewide.
