Leaves, Weather Peaking For Fall Foliage Lovers
AUGUSTA, Maine – October 8, 2003
Mother Nature is brewing the perfect weekend for fall foliage lovers. Leaf color is at peak in three of Maine’s foliage tracking zones, and nearing peak in two other zones according to the latest foliage report from the Department of Conservation. With statewide temperatures expected to be in the 60s on Saturday and Sunday, this weekend should be an excellent one for leaf-peeping trips.
Overall, state forest rangers are reporting peak, or greater than 85 percent, color change in the tracking zones covering Aroostook County, northern Piscataquis County, Somerset County, Franklin County and northern Oxford County. High, or close to 70 percent, color change is reported in all locations east of Bangor from the Downeast seacoast to Houlton.
Foliage color in Androscoggin, Kennebec and southern Penobscot counties is moderate, or close to 50 percent toward peak. The southern Maine coast from Kittery to Belfast has low, or less than 30 percent, color change.
The Maine Office of Tourism’s Web site features ten fall touring loops that highlight unique attractions and scenic roadways. The County Circuit, starting in Houlton; Franklin Heritage Loop, heading north from Livermore Falls; Lakes and Leaves, beginning in Skowhegan; and Downeast Villages and Vistas, from Ellsworth to Calais, are best bets for spectacular foliage color this weekend. For directions and descriptions of all of Maine’s touring loops, visit the Web site at www.visitmaine.com.
