The Maine Forest Service’s Firewise Communities / USA program
What is Firewise Communities / USA
- National recognition program created by National Fire Protection Association
- Involves local homeowners, Fire Depts, Community leaders and State / Federal Forest Service
- Can be used to reduce the threat of wildfire in existing communities or when planning new communities.
Firewise common goals:
- Reduce loss of lives, property and resources to wildland fire
- Maintain communities in a way that is compatible with our natural surroundings
- The Firewise Communities approach emphasizes community responsibility and involvement
Maine’s Firewise Program
The ideal Firewise Community for Maine
- Has already participated in the MFS “Wildland Urban Interface” (WUI) program
- The results of the WUI assessment indicate a high risk of wildfire
- A small community < 100 homes with an active homeowner association
- Motivated participants
Steps to achieve Firewise status
- Complete a community assessment (i.e., MFS WUI program)
- Form a Firewise board
- Create a 2 – 3 year Firewise plan
- Hold a “Firewise Day” each year
- Invest $2 per capita in annual Firewise projects
(which can easily be obtained by completing a “brush chipping day” and a “Firewise Day”)
