Marine Resources

As the variety and intensity of uses proposed for Maine’s coastal waters increases, the Maine Coastal Program has placed special emphasis in the last several years on ocean and marine resource management, in collaboration with the Department of Marine Resources.

• Maine’s Nearshore Waters:  Current Uses and Anticipated Trends 2006

In 2006, the agencies jointly released The Maine Bay Management Study, an analysis of how Maine needs to improve in the areas of geographically-specific resource management, interagency coordination and ecosystem approaches, availability and usefulness of data and GIS, and funding for resource management 

• The Coastal Program has invested in two pilot projects that forward the recommendations of the Bay Management Study, in Taunton Bay  and Muscongus Bay.

The Coastal Program has also supported studies, mapping and stakeholder outreach efforts conducted by Maine DMR.

• Eelgrass Mapping: mapping done by Maine DMR biologist Seth Barker to establish location of eelgrass meadows, an important marine and estuarine coastal aquatic habitat
