Field Guides and Maps

New England Intercollegiate Geological Conference (NEIGC)

The NEIGC is a loosely organized event that circulates among New England institutions of higher education with strong geology departments and programs. Each year some school hosts the conference and issues a Field Trip Guidebook detailing field trips in that school's geographic area. Trips are highly detailed with very accurate road logs, stop descriptions, and discussions of the observed geology. A central clearing house for these publications does NOT exist, unfortunately, but the contact people listed below will be able to tell you if copies of their particular guidebook are still in print. These books are excellent and the cost is nominal.

A complete file of all recent NEIGC field guides, including those to other New England states, is available for inspection at the Maine Geological Survey library, Ray Building, Hospital Street, Augusta, Maine. Additionally, copies usually can be found in public and private college and university libraries. Copies of many of the earlier guides, from the first guide in 1901 through the 1960's are, for the most part, out of print.

The following companies and/or organizations provide highly specialized resources and materials usually of one specific type. The information provided for each resource is current as of 1991.

In addition to some highly technical references dealing with petroleum geology, the AAPG produces a number of GEOLOGICAL HIGHWAY MAPS; these are a combination of road map/bedrock geology map for various areas of the United States. The northeastern U.S. map includes the New England states as well as N.Y., N.J., and PA. It sells for $9 plus $1.90 shipping. Colors are bright, geologic sections are included; scale is 1 inch = 30 miles. Maps for the maritime provinces are also available.

While the MGS has a variety of useful publications, their premier field guide for educators is Bulletin #41, A Collector's Guide To Maine Mineral Localities by Thompson and others; revised in 1992, the newest edition lists numerous collecting and visiting sites as well as giving an overview of Maine's geological development. The MGS has also published an excellent guidebook to the geology of Acadia National Park, with a full color geologic map.
