Figure 4. Drawing showing ideal graded bedding in sedimentary rocks. The coarser heavier material settled out of the water faster and is at the bottom of the bed. The size of the sand and silt becomes finer towards the top of the bed. Geologists used these and other features to unravel the deformation history of layered rocks.
