Figure 2. The light colored bands in this outcrop are granofels which consists mostly of quartz and feldspar. The dark layers are schist. Originally sand and mud respectively, these layers have been subjected to heat and pressure during mountain building that also tilted them on end. The layering runs northeast-southwest in this area of Maine. This is from Area 1 on the map. Last updated on October 6, 2005 |
