Figure 23. Histograms depict the nature of the seafloor in each physiographic zone. The data were derived from digitized bathymetry overlain with surficial geology, and compiled at 10-meter depth intervals using a GIS. Each 10-meter interval is characterized by the relative abundance (areal percentage) of four substrate types. This demonstrates that rock dominates Rocky Zones at all depths; mud is most abundant in Nearshore Basins, Shelf Valleys, and Outer Basins; sand is most common in Nearshore ramps; and gravel is dominant in Hard-Bottom Plains.
